Cremona Contemporanea was born with the aim of enhancing Cremona’s historical and artistic heritage through a dialogue with contemporary art, strengthening the city’s image as a place of culture, quality, and forward-looking design. Since 2023, the initiative has transformed Cremona for one week into a widespread, free, and open exhibition route, involving historic palaces, private spaces, and venues that are not usually accessible. This itinerary brings together artworks conceived in relation to the sites that host them and invites both residents and visitors to rediscover Cremona through a cultural journey that highlights its history, architecture, and potential for regeneration. In this way, an immediate relationship is activated between the public and the heritage, fostering participation, dialogue, and a deeper awareness of the cultural value of the territory.
Over its first three editions, the event has shown steady growth, exceeding 20.000 visitors per year during the opening week, with a qualified audience from Lombardy, the rest of Italy, and abroad, as well as significant attention from national media. This development demonstrates the project’s ability to establish itself as a recognizable cultural event of local and regional importance, further strengthened by its recognition at the Flash Art Italia Award 2026, where Cremona Contemporanea was nominated among the best projects in the Art and Territory category. This achievement has helped bring both the event and the city of Cremona to the attention of the national cultural landscape as an example of excellence.
The fourth edition is even more ambitious, with numerous new features. At its core remains a large-scale, citywide exhibition that is free and open to the public, bringing together site-specific installations, public art interventions, performances, and exhibition projects conceived in direct relation to historic palaces, private spaces, and previously unseen locations. The central aim continues to be the enhancement of Cremona through contemporary art, activating cultural routes that encourage residents to rediscover the city while also attracting regional, national, and international audiences. The map of Cremona Contemporanea will develop from a number of venues that have now become key stops of the event, alongside new spaces—often normally closed to the public—which will further enrich the city’s cultural geography and offer new opportunities for exploration. From a curatorial perspective, the core program, under the artistic direction of Rossella Farinotti, will be dedicated to Italian art, featuring artists of national and international relevance. This choice is intended to strengthen the quality and recognisability of the artistic program, consolidating Cremona as a place of high-level cultural production.
Particular attention is devoted to the development of collaborations, both within and beyond the local context. The main new feature is the involvement of curators from different generations, each engaged in a specific project within a venue across the city. This approach will enable Cremona to welcome diverse artistic communities, fostering a plurality of languages, the emergence of new practices, and a broader dialogue between artists, professionals, and the local context.
Cremona Contemporanea thus confirms itself as a moment of encounter and exchange that continues to grow over time, enhancing the dialogue between contemporary practice and tradition, and contributing to making the city a dynamic, open, and ever-evolving cultural reference point.
